Find a midwife.

Currently, midwifery services are only available in New Brunswick through the Fredericton Midwifery Centre. The first step to getting a midwife is to fill out an intake form. Find out more information on how to do so here.

If you are outside of the Fredericton area, you can still fill out an intake form. Find out more about how to support expansion of midwifery here.

Brittany Stairs, RM

| Fredericton, NB

Originally from Fredericton, Brittany only discovered midwifery by chance, but she immediately knew she found her dream job. Brittany earned a Bachelor of Arts with honours from St. Thomas University and worked at the Fredericton Sexual Assault Crisis Centre before moving to Vancouver, BC, to pursue a Bachelor of Midwifery. During her midwifery education, Brittany had the privilege of working with families in British Columbia and Uganda. After graduating, Brittany worked in New Westminster for a year before moving back home to join the Fredericton Midwifery Centre.

Brittany believes strongly in informed choice - she will work to give your recommendations and guidance tailored to your individual circumstance - and support and advocate for your informed choices.

During appointments, you’ll find Brittany talking entirely too much about her mom and her very good dog, Maisie. Brittany also enjoys good food, travelling, babies of every kind, and spending time with her family.

I’m originally from Petitcodiac, New Brunswick and began my midwifery journey in 2009 at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. During my education I completed clinical placements in Kitchener-Waterloo, ON and Moncton, NB. Following my graduation in 2013 I worked for 5 years at the IWK Community Midwives in Halifax, Nova Scotia before taking a position with the Fredericton Midwifery Centre in 2017 as a part of the team implementing the first midwifery program in New Brunswick. It has been wonderful to be able to finally support families in New Brunswick through their pregnancy, birth and post-partum experiences, and I especially enjoy providing postpartum home visits and breastfeeding support. In my spare time I enjoy hiking, gardening, baking, and spending time with my family. I look forward to the continued growth and expansion of midwifery in New Brunswick.

I was born in Fredericton and grew up in small-town Ontario and New Brunswick. I was first introduced to Midwifery by witnessing my siblings’ home births starting at age 3. I completed a Bachelor Degree in English at St. Frances Xavier University in Nova Scotia before realizing that Midwifery was my true calling. I completed an honours Bachelor of Health Science in Midwifery from Laurentian University and became registered to practice in 2013. I spent the last 7 years practicing in rural Ontario where I worked on many of same challenges that face New Brunswick, like distance from hospitals, staff and primary care provider shortages, and access to prenatal care for at risk populations. As head midwife of my local hospital for the last 5 years, I helped build the midwifery program, create positive interprofessional relationships, and collaborated to establish evidence-based practices such as skin-to-skin in the OR. I am passionate about empowering women to birth with dignity and autonomy.
